Period 6 (American Lit.): Week Two, Into the Wild

Answer both questions below (one for chapter 4; one for chapter 5)

Chapter 4
1) What relationship is Alex/Chris establishing with the land? How does he appear to view his place in the world? Use one specific incident from this chapter to support your reasoning.

Chapter 5
2) What does the following passage from page 44 reveal? Consider both McCandless' nature or personality, as well as the point of view of the biographer, Krakauer.
"...[McCandless] was so enthralled by these tales, however, that he seemed to forget they were works of fiction, constructions of the imagination that had more to do with London's romantic sensibilities than with the actualities of life in the subarctic wilderness. McCandless conveniently overlooked the fact that London himself had spent just a single winter in the North and that he'd died by his own hand on his California estate at the age of forty, a fatuous drunk, obese and pathetic, maintaining a sedentary existence that bore scant resemblance to the ideals he espoused in print."

  2. 1) At the beginning of ch. 4, Chris is being compared to A. californica, because a flower like him is hard to find, suggesting that he is part of nature. He feels that his place in the world is to remain hidden and unnoticed just like the plant.
    2) The passage reveals that Chris forgot about how London's works were just fiction and part of London's imagination. This is where Chris mixed reality with imagination and got himself lost in this. Krakauer's point of view affects this passage because he thinks of Chris as an intelligent human being and with this he tells the reader of how Chris had a vivid imagination that he to places unimaginable.

  3. 1).In the introduction Alex starts off with the backround of the rare flower the Californica its demographics and description. However Alex does emphasize the rareness of the Californica and he may be trying to connect this to himself as being a rare and one of kind type of person. also being apart of the circle of life with nature. thus creating a voice for nature.

The passage reveals that Chris has a vivid imagination and can alow himself to be taken away from the non-fiction wold to the fiction world and still be aware that it is fiction. Also the passage gives the reader mabey hes opptomistic, adventurous, dangerous in a inteesting way. Also it may be hard for others around Chris to understand: ok how can a person let themselve go into a world aware that it is diseaving and still be phycologically "normal"? Also he is diffeent because he is able to connect with something that most people cannnot connect with. For ex.Nature

The passage reveals that chris is so caught up in London's imagination that he fail to realize that it is not real, that it is all a lie but this passgage is affected by the way chris is seen to be by other's for ex: krakauer, to him chris is seen has an intelligent person. Also this passage shows that chris has a vivde imagination

  6. 1) Alex/Chris establishes a close relationship with the land, he feels fascinated of all the beautiful scenery he has seen. Alex appears to view his place in the world as one of a kind, who sets out into a journey that no one else would, a good example would be the wildflower A. californic in the beginning of the chapter.
    2) The passage from pg. 44 reveals that Alex was very influenced by his readings and got carried away, in fact it got into the point where he let his imagination take over and forgot about the real world. Alex thought that since London was able to survive in Alaska he could survive as well as long as he kept his "spirit soaring". Krakauer's point of view is important because it shows that Krakauer has admiration towards Alex, describing Alex as an intelligent man who got to places where many humans haven't been, lived an adventure with a great imagination.

  12. 1) Alex/Chris describes the land as being A. Californica which means rare and that it has been classified as an endangered speicies. By reading the way that krauker wrote this it seems like Alex/chris believes that he's also a rare person or maybe's trying to be described as a rare person.
    2) The passage reveals that both McCandless as well as Krauker were so thrilled about the stories that for a moment they forgot that they weren't real. Krauker seemed to be more focus on london rather than the wilderness. McCandless failed to notice that the way that london lived and the way that he died.

  13. Chapter 4) In the begining, a rare flower is spoken of.Kind of in an informal tone lettingbus know intricate information om how rare it it is.This represents how Chris is in a sense a "rare" type of person. And he is also becoming more and more in tune with nature.

Chapter 5 Pt 1) This reveals how they both tend to let infatuations drive them toward doing something "big". McCandless went on a life changing, and ending, journey; whereas Krauker let his infatuation drive him to finding out more about the journey.

  14. 1)Chris had established a close relationship with the land in saying that he was "proud of... surviving on familiar plants." It appears as though Chris is trying to be one with nature and discover his abilities in life.
2)This reveals that Chris got caught up in this mysterious life of adventure and of London's ideas. The two of them were both caught up in a fairytale and didn't realize the realities of the situation.
