Period 4 (Latino Lit.): Week Three, gods go begging

Answer two of the following questions about chapter 10:

1) What does Hollis's story about his marriage reveal about Jesse as a character? What does it also help Jesse to learn?

2) Read "Fire and Ice" (below). How does Vea use the poem to further ideas in this chapter?

3) On page 233, Vea uses a bed as a metaphor in a new way. What might be the significance of this motif?

4) Why does Vea add the storyline of the Skelleys, particularly Margie and Minne? (Hint: Think about the battles or wars the women in this novel fight.)

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

- Robert Frost

  1. 1) The story Hollis Presents is similar to that of jesse, they are both men who were frozen by the war men who couldnt show love who wanted life but didnt live it men who couldnt express love. Hollis's story made Jesse realize that he was throwig love away but in a diffeent view, he finally saw that he wasnt alone that Hollis too had suffered that there was still hope for homd Carolina.
    2) The poem is used to not describe the end of the world but a persons world , what they live forr jesse interprets the poem as a reason to live he realizes that the end of desire is worst than death he realizes than neither fire nor ice matters because one can not exist without the other . He realizes that desire can not be what ends the world and that ice is what helps keep control. The poem can show fuure signs of hope for himself and Carolina, a desire for the abilty to love .

  2. 1)Jesse and Hollis have similar backgrounds/stories, both men were scared by war making thm unable to show, give or recieve love from anyone...hollis story shows jesse that love isnt to be cast aside and helps him see that there is still hope between him and carolina
2)Fire is the desire of man, it is what drives us to do great things aswell and what drives us to our own destruction...ice is hate, it is what drives to destroy ourselves but neither can exist without the other to maintain balance of the opposite, vea uses this poem to further the idea that all must be kept in check.

  3. 2)Hollis' story reveals that Jesse's character is still effected by the war & he can't love, or be loved because of what he's seen. Yet, Hollis' marriage gives Jeese a sense of hope/faith between him & Carolina.

3)The bed was used to describe the place where rape/molestation would happen. It's significant because not only did the men who fought in the war see war, but so did the little girls like Margie & Minnie.

  4. 1) Jesse and Hollis share similar upbringings. Even though they both seem benevolent, they share the symptoms of what can be diagnosed as P.T.S.D where as they have trust issues, especially in relationships, but Hollis' story reinvigorated his love for Carolina.
    3) The bed brought such abhorrence and detestation to anyone who grasped the idea of the rape and torture that was brought upon the little girls. It was such a revolting and atrocious sight to Eddie.

  5. 1)Hollis's story is almost the same as Jesse’s, hearing Hollis’s story made Jesse feel a little bit better than he did before, Hollis helped Jesse view life from another perspective. Before talking to Hollis, Jesse thought he could never love again, him and Hollis had the same point of view, but when Jesse spoke to Hollis it made him realize that there still is some hope with Carolina and him.
3)Vea uses the bed to represent all the years of rape and torment Minnie and Margie went through. The bed was a strong representation, even Eddie and Jesse felt the pain and torture those two little innocent girl were put through. The men who fought the war weren’t the only ones to go through atrocities, Margie and Minnie did too.

  6. 1.) Both men life are similar because both had suffered in war and the war affected them so much that they couldn't loved anyone, by Hollis story made Jesse realize that there can be a chance with him and his sweetheart(Carolina).
2.) Fire and ice are connected to one another just like being in a relationship two completely different people that probably bring out the ugly in them yet manages to still be together like ice and fire.

  7. 1)Hollis and Jesse are both similar. They both cant show or receive love. But Jesse realized from Hollis's story that its not to late to be with Carolina.

  8. 1. Hollis's story helped Jesse realize that what he is feeling is not unique Hollis has also suffered because of the war, both seem to become "stone". Hollis's story has shown that Jesse shouldn't waste life and Carolina because he will come to regret it. Jesse has a new hope for his relationship with Carolina.
    4. Vea adds that Richard and Bernard are their own militia group. In the barn where they keep all of their weapons there is also a bed that has an eagle on the headboard. It is revealed that it was Richard, not Bernard, that molested and raped little Minnie aswell as his sister Margie.

  9. 1) What does Hollis's story about his marriage reveal about Jesse as a character? What does it also help Jesse to learn?
Hollis story was much likely like jesses they were both scared to love and they had become stones after going to war. This reveals that Jesse himself was not the only one suffering in the story their where other people who felt almost like Jesse. This helped Jesse to see that he was not the only one feeling the same way and that his friend was suffering a lot as well. He also realizes all he did to Carolina all those things she desired and he was too afraid to please her or close his eyes.

    2) Read "Fire and Ice" (below). How does Vea use the poem to further ideas in this chapter?
In the chapter it talks about hate suffering and pain. Vea used the poem fire and ice to further those topics because either one can still kill u slowly and painful when you are still aliv it will let you taste death while you are still alive which is what a lot of this character are feeling death while they are alive.

  10. 1) Hollis’s story about his marriage reveal that Jesse was not the only one that was in that situation he was going through. He felt better after Hollis told him his story because they were the only ones that understood one another. Jesse learned that he wasn’t the only one that was feeling how he felt. Hollis’s story along with his wife’s story had replaced all the nightmares he had the night before.

    2) Vea added the storyline of the Skelleys because women along with children at that time did go through horrible things at the time of the war. These women and children lived with fear and confusion, being abused and raped. Margie and Minnie were scared to say which guy was actually guilty and it took a long time for Margie to actually reveal the truth. Margie now would have to help Minnie move on, since her mother wouldn’t be there for her, and she would only understand that, because Margie been through what Minnie been through.

  11. 1) jesse and holli were both affected by war and those memories didnt allow jesse to love carolina and if he does not do that he will be wasting his life and he will regret it.

    3) the bed is symbol of rape. Margie and Minnie were raped and thats how the bed is a symbol of rape. the women and children that faced war in their own villages were tormented and saw horrible things but so did the two girls.

  12. 1) Jesse and Hollis's stories are similar; they are scared to love. They suffered because of the war and they were like a "stone". This reveals that Jesse wasn't the only one that suffered because of the war, Hollis did too. Hollis helped Jesse see life as another perspective; Jesse shouldn't waste his life and that he may still have hope with Carolina.

    2) The significance of the bed is that it's the place where Margie and Minnie were rape. It's a symbol of their rape and the suffering that Margie and Minnie experience. Jesse and Eddy felt the pain that Margie and Minnie felt.  Not only did the men at war felt the war, its bad experiences, and tragedies, the girls did too.

  13. 1.When Hollis tell Jesse about his marraige it reveals that the war that both Jesse and Hollis have been through has effeted them a lot and it makes Jesse realize that he still has time to fix things between him and Carolina so that he wont end up like Hollis.
4.Vea adds the storyline to show why Margie never spoke out and told the trueth which was that Richard was the one that raped Minnie but she never said anything because she was also a victom of Richard and she was also raped.

  14. 1) The story Hollis presened made Jesse realize that he and Hollis were very similar to each other, they both were men who had suffered because of the war and they were very affected by it. They could not show loove or express it because of the experiences they had to go through in war. It was as though they had become "stone". Hollis 's story made Jesse realize that he wasn't valuing what he had and that he still had hope with Carolina

3)Vea uses the bed as a representation of all of the years of rape and torment Minnie and Maggie had had to go through. This was very significant because the men werent the only ones to fight in the war. Both Minnie and Maggie were also in a war themselves because of all of the attrocities they had to go through. the bed was a representation of the pain and torture the two girls had to face

  15. 1)Holli and Jesse have noticed that they have similar background, they were both men who suffured because of the war. They also were men that couldnt show or express love because of what they been through war.Holli's story open jesse eyes that he could still have another chance with Carolina.
3)Vea uses the bed to represent the times and years that Minnie and Maggie were rape and torment and also what they had to go through. Its significant because the men who fought the war not only saw it but the little girls as well(Minnie and Maggie).

  16. 1.)Jesse related to Hollis story and it influenced his thoughts on love and continuing with his relationship with Carolina. He saw that it was possible, there was potential in moving forward and healing the scars left behing my the war memories. He saw that Hollis had gone through similar experiences as him and managed to learn to love again so him talking to Hollis helped him have hope for his and Carolinas relationship.

3.)The bed represents all the horrible actions that Minnie and Maggie were put through, such as rape and molestation. They too met the reality of war.

  17. 1. Holli's story reveals that Jesse and Holli are similar because they both have a fear of commitment or a fear of not being able to love someone as much as they love them. This story helps Jesse realize that there is still some type of hope for him to be able to love Carolina.
    2. I think that the bed signifies of any wrong doing that may have occured on it such as rape. It signified the wrong in a lot of the cases that Jesse has delt with throughout the years.

  18. 1.Hollis's story makes Jesse realize that they were both scared by the war and also that he's not the only one with trust issues. Therefore, his story makes Jesse realize that he still has a chance to love Caroline.
3.Vea uses the bed in order to signify rape and molestation that the little girls had to endure during the war. They also were figthing there own war.

  19. 1) Well Hollis' story about his marriage revealed that Jesse and himself both had similar characters. They were both involved in the war and both suffered as a result from it. Jesse and Hollis both developed the type of personality that is just is non emotional. So when Jesse heard Holiss' story he realized that he wasnt the only one fighting demons that originated from the war. From listening to the story Jesse knew he had a chance with Carolina.

    3) Well the metaphor being implied by the bed is that it refers to the rape and molestation that Minnie and Maggie had to suffer through. They too in a sense had to go through their own personal war and had to fight in it as well.

  20. 1.) Hollis’s story made Jesse realize that they have some things in common. Both men were affected by the war. They felt as if they couldn’t love. His story also helped Jesse realize that it isn’t too late for him to be with Carolina.
3.) Vea uses the bed to represent rape. The two little girls both suffered a lot. Just like the men in the war they too had something to struggle and suffer about.

  21. 1) Hollis's story about his marriage is that they both shared the same things they were feeling having to have the affecting expirience from war. Jesse then realized after having to have heard the story from Hollis, he knew then he had an opportunity with Carolina.

    2) Vea uses the bed as a significance of rape who Minnie and Maggie confronted in thier tormented lifes.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 2. Vea uses this poem as a way of showing how two complete opposite elements or in this case people can attract. Some people may choose “fire” some may choose ice” but in the end it doesn’t really matter because both can’t live without each other. This is referring to a relationship, Jesse and Carolina.
    3. Vea uses a bed to show the rape that was going on all those years. The significance is that she trying to show how the men in war weren’t the only ones going through a hard time, so were the little girls like Margie and Minnie.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 2)Vea use the poem to further ideas in this chapter to show that he has two ways of showing his opposite elements, but also interprets the poem as a reason to live and everything is worse r than death itself.
3)Vea uses the bed to represent all of the years and torment Minnie and Maggie had had to go through the rape.

  24. 1) Hollis marriage story revealed that he is as simliar to Jesse's. Because both of them had that fear to ever love again. They both were involved in the war and because of it they became "stone". Jesse from this learned that not all hope is lost. And that he still had a chance with Carolina.

    2) Vea uses the poem to show how two completely different things can be so alike.
