Period 6 (American Lit.): Week Three, Into the Wild

Chapter 6: Answer one of the two questions below.

1) Re-read the letter McCandless writes to Franz on pages 56-58. On page 57, McCandless opines, "You are wrong if you think Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships. God has placed it all around us. It is in everything and anything we might experience. We just have to have the courage to turn against our habitual lifestyle and engage in unconventional living." Briefly explain McCandless' perspective on joy. To what extent do you agree or disagree with his position?

2)Re-read the passage from Thoreau that begins the chapter. Identify what you believe might be an aphorism from the selection. Explain the meaning of the aphorism and then explain how McCandless tries to live out that idea thus far throughout the book.

Chapter 7: Answer one of the two questions below.

3)What commentary about Americans' relationship to ideas about sex and sexuality is the author making? (Be sure you understand the definition of "commentary," and re-read pages 65 and 66.

4) Westerberg recalls of Alex that there were "gaps in his thinking" (Krakauer, 63). Describe one such "gap" that you have discovered in Alex as you read about his travels, relationships, ideas, and accomplishments.

  1. Chapter 6.McCandless' perspective on life is that you do not have to have human interactions to be fulfilled. Joy is all around in every aspect. You just have to have the courage to let go of everything your used to and try something new.
i qualify McCandles perspective because i believe in trying things differently you may find joy but i don't not believe you have to let everything go.

Chapter 7.Krauker's opinion on sex and sexuality within Americans is that once someone isnt intrigued with sex than questions begin to arouse about ones sexuality.

  2. To Chris joy is to lose his or her identity and old lifestyle to go out something he or she would never do in order to find joy.I qualify this statement because a person should not have to lose who they are in order to enjoy life. Trying new things alone can bring a person joy or help them find things they love or what they find interesting.

The commentary of Americans' relationship about sex and sexuality is that if a person is not having intercourse with the opposite sex than people begin to wounder about their sexuality

  4. Chapter 6:
Alex's perspective of joy is that it could only be found from adventures that challenge your daily life, live out the unexpected, instead of living the same dull life where you know what's going to happen next. I strongly agree to McCandless' perspective of joy because we only live life once, and like this one song goes " everyone dies but not everyone lives." . In order to have joy we need to get out there and explore and make every day of our lives worth it because we don't know how much time we have left.

    Chapter 7:
A mainly gap that Alex had in his thoughts were when people asked him about his family. When people would asked him about his family he didn't really wanted to talked about the subject and tried to change it. In my opinion Alex had these gaps because he wondered how his family was doing, and maybe if he was being missed?.

  5. Chapter 6: McCandless perspective of joy is mainly joy can be experienced through everything even the smallest things in life can have joy in it because god has put it in everything and i disagree because if joy was in everything then there would be nothin tha would disapoint or upset us.i do believe that joy is in our lives but in everything we do or experience because if it was we would have no room for sadness and disapiontments and also that i think McCandless was trying to say by stating "You are wrong if you think Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships". because htat is true from human relationships not only does it come joy but sadness and dispare as well.

Chapter 7: that americans even though they want sex and are curious about it we ideed are horrified by it. also those who have not had intercourse with their partner also start to wounder and question their sexuality and i think that was McCandless commentary was expaining.

  6. Chapter 6- McCandless perspective of joy is that joy can be anything even the smallest things in life can bring you joy. I disagree with this though because if everything was joy then people wouldn't be getting sad and stuff.

Chapter 7-One gap that i've noticed about Alex is that everytime they would ask him about his family he wouldn't really talk about them. He would change or try to change the conversation. My opinion is that he was having these gaps because at times he probably wondered if his family thaught about him or how his family was doing.

  7. chapter 6 McCandless view and perspective is your happiness can expand any way even through the littlest things in life i agree with it cause anyone can find happiness no matter how bad a situation can be .

Ch ,7 one gap i recognized was when people Had as him about his relatives he wasnt really to happy to answer or would speak of them .maybe he didnt think his family cared that he was gone or would they try to come search for him

  8. Ch.6 He says that joy is found all around us,that even in the most simplest things in life we can find joy.i agree because if we are positive about things then we will find joy.

Ch.7Almost all the people that talk to alex wondered about his family and what relationship they had.i think that alex did think about his family at some point.i think that everybody thinks their family no matter what kind of relationship they have.

  9. Chapter 6 : mcCandless says that you can find joy in some of the most simple forms. He says that joy is all around us but its up to us to actually seek that happiness.

Chapter 7: The gap that i found to be consistent way his family, he never really spoke on their behalf let alone mentioned them, he always brushed the topic of his family off, i think he did this because he has a little resentment towards his family for not inquiring about his whereabouts

  10. Chapter 6- McCandless perspective of joy is that joy is found where ever you want it to be found. If you want to be happy you can be happy its all up to you. I agree because at the end it comes down to who you are and if you want to be happy and have joy or want to make your life miserable.

Chapter7:The commentary of Americans' relationship about sex and sexuality is that in my opinion everybody questions them selves about their sexuality at one point. One gap can be when everybody asked him about his family and he didnt know what to answer maybe he thought that his family wasnt their for him that they didnt care for him.

  11. CHAPTER 6;
    2) McCandless tries to live out that idea thus far throughout the book, by adopting and developing a helter-skelter style of life, and by making each day a new horizon. I agree Alex point of view because I believe that joy can come from trying new things, and living to the fullest.
    CHAPTER 7;
    1) Krakauer indicates that Americans' relationship to ideas about sex and sexuality is that once people start to experiment with the same sex than more people begin to question their sexuality.

  12. 1)McCandless is stating that Joy isn't only found in human relations but also in nature. And to find this Joy one must be courageous and abandon his comfortable lifestyles to appreciate to Joy that is nature. If everyone had the same mindset as McCandless the world would be much healthier and less polluted. To agree is to believe and I believe that McCandless is correct. I appreciate nature and I think i would appreciate it more if I experienced it head-on. Then I would understand the Joy of nature and possibly appreciate society a little bit more.

3)Krakauer is stating that as Americans, we are "obessed" by "the enticements of the flesh" and if someone chooses not to indulge themselves in the acts we frown upon them. We also suspect them of being homosexual.

  13. 1) McCandless describes joy as being all around the world. Joy doesn't occur in only human reltionships, it is seen in many different ways. I agree because if we the people take time to think and see, than we'll actually notice thejoy that's brought to people and things in many different ways.
    2) The commentary about amerucans explains that if someone is known for not having sexual intercourse, than it might make people believe that he/she is homosexual.

  14. In McCandeless' opinion are able to find joy in exploring new heights, or in this case in nature, McCandless believes that we can obtain joy by giving up our lifestyles and trying something new.In my opinion this is partially true, I believe that if you don't believe you already have complete joy; that you should venture out and try to achieve it.Although I don't believe that you should necessarily give up everything.

The statements show how Americans are so self indulged that we consider anyone who isn't sexually active or at showing signs of possibly becoming sexually active, we consider it odd or possibly even homosexual.

A gap that I have noticed with Alex is mainly his family, whenever his family is mentioned, there is never much said about them, and the topic is always skimmed over.Possibly because he doesn't want all the questioning about them.

  15. 1. McCandless perspective on joy is that you can find it anywhere not just with people. That you will find joy when you try new things and leave your old life behind. That joy can not just be found with people but with nature too. I agree with this because its true that you can find joy doing new things and its up to you whether you wanna be happy or not.
    3. The commentary that he's making about Americans relationships about sex and sexuality is that if you are not having sex than they are going to start to think differently about their sexuality and start questioning it.

  16. 1.McCandless is saying that joy can be found everywhere not just by having humans bring it to you and you should try new things instead of the same things over again
chp7 if you arent having sex with the oppsite sex then you start to question your sexuality

  17. 1) McCandless pronounces joy as something pure and everlasting in life rather than temporary as human relationships. I agree in saying that joy comes from the experiences a person exhibits and one can only have this pure joy if they are open to adventure and situations other than the usual.
    2) The author is saying that if someone is not sexually or does not seem to be sexually attracted to the opposite sex then one might inquire about their sexuality. But some may also admire the distance someone has from sex knowing that their minds are focused on greater ideas.
