Period 6 (American Lit): Week One, Into the Wild

Given the description of the perilous journey to the bus as described in chapter 2, a natural question arises: What would possess someone to want to not simply visit there, but live there? With this in mind, answer the following question: 1) How does the selection from Jack London's book at the opening of the chapter hint at McCandless's reasoning?

For chapter three, answer one of the following:
2) What do we learn of Alex/Chris from Westerberg's description of Alex's time in Carthage? Why is Alex's work ethic significant? Explain.

3). How does McCandless view college? Is his treatment of his parents fair? Selfish? Smart? Describe your point of view and explain.

  1. 1). Mabey that's how McCandless was feeling and taking a selection from another text really made the reade feel how McCandless was feeling also it does give the begining of the chapter a sense of thriller and a dark felling toit because of the wording jack london chose
because why would someone want to visit and live in an old abondond bus unless they were disturbed or tired of the same life and was not happy with they way their living.
2).Alex was the hard worker he'd do what ever manual labor was asked of him. he also set high standards for himself if he stated a job he'd finish it too."You coluld tell right away that Alez was intelligent."- westerberg, Chris was the opposite of alex Chris had graduated from Emory University with a GPA of 3.72 he also was reserved meaning he belived that titles were irrelevant so he turned down the offer from Phi Beta Kappa. Also Alexis work ethic was very significant beacuse of his work ethic he got things done and what ever he started he'd get done no matte how dirty the job. you would think Chis had everything going for him but out of Chris and Alex. Chis was the one gave it all up to go to the wild so it does make me wonder what set him off to drop everything and ventur into the wild.

  2. 1) The selection from Jack London's book at the opening of the chapter hints McCandless reasoning because from my point of view McCandless related to London's point of view, both of them felt that their life needed more adventure because their life was becoming lame and sad.
    2) In Westerberg's description of Alex/Chris we learn that Alex was dedicated, a hard working man who set high standards, and that he had a charm that was able to capture people's heart. Alex's work ethic is significant because it leaves the reader intrigue, wondering why did he ever set into the wild when he had an opportunity to start a new life.

  3. 1.The selection from Jack London's book at the opening of the chapter hint at McCandless's reasoning by the description of the terrain he was persuaded to live free to be alone. There was something exotic, the environment wasnt sad.
2.In chapter 3 we learn that alex is a hard worker. His work ethic is significant because it matches his principles
3.Chris thought college was an absurd and onerous duty.I think Chris is respectful but independent of his parents , he's not really fair to them his actions may also make him come off as selfish , but everything he does is done intelligently little pieces of a huge puzzle.

  4. 1)The selection of Jack London at the opening at the book have some similarities.they both wanted to change their life.It has the tone of sadness.
2)In chapter 3 we discover that alex is a very hard working person. His work ethic is significant because it fits him perfectly. He wouldn't do nothing else if he didnt finish what he was doing.
3)he has an idea that college is absurd and onerous duty.I dont think that hes treating them fairly doing what he was doing because he left without saying nothing to his parents.i think that his parents did care about him but he didnt realized it.he was selfish because of the way he left.

  5. 1) The selection from Jack London's book at the opening of the chapter hints at Chris's reasoning because he views nature as something he's never seen before, like uncharted territory. Chris is fascinated by nature and he wants to explore what he thinks of as never before seen. He not only wants to live here, he wants to take in all of nature's beauty and what it has to offer.
    2) Chris viewed college as something he didn't need, he didn't think that having diplomas and degrees made you intelligent. His treatment of his parent was selfish because he treated them like they didn't mean anything to him when his parents gave everything to help him succeed.

  6. Chapter 2
    1) The opening from Jack London's book hint tno McCandless's reasoning is by making some type of connetion about both of them wanting to go in the wild or the wild Itself or it could be that they both wanted to go out and explore the world.
    Chapter3
    1) In chapter3 we learn that Alex/Chris is intelligent and hard working. Alex work ethic is significant because it is a connection saying that Alex will use his brain and work hard to get where he wants to be.
    2) College to chri was a task or a duty. The way Chris treated his parents made him seem stubborn but independent, because even though he didn't want anything from them or wanted to do it on his own he didn't have to be rude about it, he should have told them ho he felt about the whole situation.

2.In chapter 3 we dicover that Alex was dedicated and a high working man who has set high standards. He also had something that won peoples heart.
3.His idea of college is absurd and a duty. I honestly don't think hes treating his parents right even though it made him seem independent at times. He didn't have to be rude to them he could of told them how he felt about everything.

  8. chapter 2 #1
jack londons selection at the opening of the book hints at McCandless reasoning to go live in the bus because in the slection it talks about how nature laughs at the effort and act of life. so McCandless didnt want to try and live, he wanted to surreneder to nature in a way,i think he wanted to die.
    chapter 3 #2
westerbergs description of alex/chris showed him as a very hardworking person. alex/chris was dedicated to his work and always set high standards for hisself. Alexs work ethic is very significant because it showed how he would work when he went into the wild, also gave us more of an insight on alex personality and why he was so determined to go into the wild.

  9. 1.The selection of Jack London book at the opening of the description hints McCandless because its describing the way that Chris wanted to live. Maybe Jack and Chris both felt more relaxed and more comfortable with nature and peace. It seems as if they wanted to make their life an adventure.
    2. Westbirg describes that Alex is the harderst worker he has ever seen. Alex wouldn't give up on anything, whatever he started he made sure he finished it.His work ethic is significant because he had high standards for himself; and by doing so people would feel comfortable around him.

  10. 1.The selection from Jack London's book hints at McCandless's Because its showing Chris's Way Of Life and How He thought .Maybe He wanted to Soar More He Was Really eager .

2.In chapter 3 we find out that Alex was Very Hard Working And What ever He started He Finished . He had High Standards And Set A great Example

    3. I dont Believe he's In the Wrong He's Older and He Could of Been Straight out it would have been Much Easier and better to understand .

  11. 1)The selection from Jack London's book at the opening of the chapter hints McCandless reasoning because they want to explore the world more. They are both very interested on seeing whats out there. Maybe they feel that being out is more peaceful and calm.
2)We learned that Alex was very dedicated to his work. He didnt give up something if he really wanted it. Everything he wanted to do he got it done. He didnt give up easily.
3)I think that alex could of just been straight up and said how he felt about college. Maybe he wanted to seem independent but the way that he was doing things were very rude and at times in my opinion childish. Maybe even a little selfish.

  12. 1)The selection from Jack London's book at the opening of chapter two hint at the reasoning of understanding the wild and the excitement it has to offer. McCandless and Jack saw something intriguing and adventurous in nature that set itself apart from the unsettled world. They saw something that took more effort in which to live that contained a bitter sadness that could not compare to the world outside of it.
3)McCandless views college as a roadblock to life and to the advantages that he wants to have in life. He saw it as a duty that was required of him but something that he did not want himself. I qualify in saying that the treatment towards his parents were selfish. The fact that he is grown and on his own allows him to not have to rely on his parents and not give them too much information. But him being their son requires him to inform his parents of his whereabouts when traveling too far. McCandless parents love him and are worried about him, so yes he would be classified as selfish.

  13. 1)London's piece hints at McCandless's reasoning because they have the same values and ideals, especially about life and nature, and since McCandless admires London then its only fitting that his reasoning for his actions are influenced by London.

    2) In Chapter 3 we learn that Alex is hardworking and determined, we also learn that he is intellegent. This is significant because we can then get a clue of how he is on his journey, and how he wont give up on it, also on how his determination won't allow him to let anything discourage him from it.

3)McCandless views college as a bad thing, like its preventing him from something bigger then him.His treatment of his parents is both smart and selfish; selfish because his parents will worry and friends and family are devestated about his diappearence, but none the less smart because McCandless was able to realize and understand that if he'd kept contact with his parents and let them know where he was, that it would have hindered his experience, and he wouldn't have been able to go on the journey for multiple reasons.

  14. 1. To me Jack London's piece at the start of Chapter 2 hints to McCandless reasons for living in the bus because its clear that they have the same train of thought and headspace. They were both fasinated by this new way of life.
    2. In chapter 3 we learned that Alex is persistent, smart and one of the hardest workers ever. He was the time of person that finished every task he started. He was very dedicated. This is significant because it gives the reader a little hope that he will do his best to come conquer his journey.

  15. 1 london was saying that they had the same thinking and values about life and were intersted in the same things
2 he wanted to complete everything and worked very hard to do so
3 he didnt see college as useful and it slowed things down and it was selfish of him to leave his parents without telling them because they would worry about their child

  16. 1. The selection from Jack London's book at the opening of the page hints McCandless reasoning because its showing how Chris wanted to live and travel more. It seems as if both Chris and Jack liked to be more involved with nature and they found it more calm. So they both wanted to go into the wild.
    2. We learned that Chris was a hard working man. That when he starts something he makes sure to finish it as best as he can. Also that he was pretty easy to get along with, the people were comfortable with him. Chris work ethic is significant because it showed how he would put high standards for himself and wouldn't give up.

  17. 1.)The beginning or opening of the book, London had both compared in changing their lives. His tone in the selection had a bit of adventureest sort of in the text, some happiness to be free and a bit of saddness.
2.) in chapter 3 it reveals that Alex is a genious, very intellegent and once he starts a duty or some sort and he finishes with no hesitation.
3)his view in college was that it was pointless and would slowly distrupt the humans free life, also leaving his parents with out knowing was kind of smart because if he did they would probably go out searching for him, but at the same time it was selfish because he could of said bye and his parents would of knew what he wanted, which was to be free.

  18. 1)Jack London's selection says that "theincommunicable wisdom of eternity" laughs at the "futility of life and effort of life". I believe McCandless was trying to prove that his life isn't useless.
2)Westerberg described McCandless as the Intelligent-at-sight type and a hard worker at Whatever he did. McCandless's ethics were siignificant because he will work as hard as he could for anything he was doing. I can picture him working hard to fight for his life.
3)McCandless, I believe, worked hard in college as he did everything else. I believe his parents were protective thats why they give him everything because they still view him as their kid and his parents don't want him to be independent, so in a way they are selfish.
