Periods 5 & 6: WEEK THREE

"French Lessons"
Respond to the following question no later than Friday, January 7th.

Why is this chapter entitled "french lessons"? Identify some of the specific things that characters learn in this chapter. Specifically, what is the main "lesson" that Jesse ultimately learns?

  1. People in this particular chapter use french words.
Characters learn that life is valuable and that life is not a war.

Life is not a war and can't compare a war with today's real world nor to the court's judgement.

  2. It is entitled "french lesson" because french is the only language that both Jesse and Hong can understtand eachother besides broken english and spanish. Some specific things he learns are the N. Vietnese views on Americans. They are taught that people of color live in a seperate country (Vea,81). He also learns that the word "tournevis" means screwdriver. The main lesson learn by Jesse is the truth isn't always told. He figured out what really happened to Hong Trac. Jesse found out that the military makes the deaths look like they were due to a firefight. He is left in a state of awe because of what he learned.

  4. This chapter is titled "french lessons" because french is the language they spoke and understood. In this chapter the characters learned the importance of life and how valuable life is. Life is what people make of it. It can have some truth and it can have some fabrication. And that you can't compare life to war because life is not a war. Life shouldn't be treated or viewed as if its a war. It also showed how people of different races are treated in other countries. "children are told in school that all people of color live in separate countries....white Americans are rich and throw gallons of milk in ocean to spite the poor...and teachers are not allowed to teach their students". (pg.81)

Jesse learned that Hong Trac had a fear of death. "When the bombs fall I curl up like a trembling child and pray that death will be painless." (pg.83,Vea) Jesse was in disbelief when he heard the truth. And he later learned that "tournevis" means screwdriver. (pg.86)

  5. For this chapter it is entitled "French Lessons" because its the language Jesse and Hong both knew and were familar with. It was the language they both spoke and understood. As for some specific things they learn is that different people live in different countries meaning people of different views and the way they see things live in different parts of the world like people of color and race.

  6. This chapter demonstrated how people can fabricate the truth about things. And that everyone have different views about other countries and their race. Often times people fabricate the truth to make their situation appear good. And other situation to appear bad. However, in order to know the truth we have to search for the truth.

  7. This chapter is called "french lessons" because that is the language that Jesse and the other man Hong understand to communicate to each other. In this chapter they show the importance of a certain race or culture. Jesse learned that life is not always about war and that life can be calm if you let it be. Being a racist person or hating a certain race will not make this world a better place.

  9. This chapter is titled french lessons because that is the language that Jesse and Hong share in common, the only language that they can both communicate very well.A thing that Jesse learns in the chapter is about culture and race like Hong. The main lesson Jesse learns is that Hong is afraid of death as mention by Hong,"...Hong laughed a dark, sardonic laugh. if that is true, then why do i fear death so much?" (Vea,83)

  10. This chapter is entitled as "French Lessons" because of course the chapter has French words. Besides that, in the war neither man bothers to learn the enemy's language so the only language that Jesse Pasadoble and Hong Trac could communicate was French. I know this because Vea states, "Neither man had bothers to learn much of the enemy's language." (Vea, 79)

In this chapter, what Hong learns about America is that people of color live in separate country. "[Hong] and do you live in a separate country?"..."[Pasadoble] we do." (81)
What Jesse learns in this chapter is that Vietnamese value their life because like Hong say, he fears death so much, and that Hong prays that death would be painless, and life is a valuable thing. "In America they say that you Vietnamese do not value life."[Jesse] and Hong respond by saying "if that is true, then why do I fear death so much?.. and I pray that death will be painless… No, Jesse, life is valuable." (83)

The main lesson that Jesse ultimately learns is that the truth is not what it appears to be. At first Jesse thought the military would not kill an unarmed prisoner but later he discovered that Hong was killed by his military. Jesse discovered that there were bullet holes in Hong body. In addition, Jesse remembered that Hong had said “It is said that [Jesse’s army] have a special way of torturing prisoners. They use a tournevis.” (84) And later Jesse found out by a Frenchwomen that tournevis is a screwdriver. She quotes “… what is it? Oh, yes, I know. It is what you call a screwdriver.” (86) What Jesse also learns that life is valuable.

  11. In my oppinion the chapter is entitled "French lessons" because Jesse meets Hong Trac, a Vietnamese soilder who speaks French and shares that same quality with him.I also believe it is entitled that way because it reveals that no matter where you are in the world you can find someone that can relate to u and your abilities.Moving on towards the characters and one of the lessons they learn is that all rumors can't be true, but if you some to a person with out hatred, honesty, and respect you will be able to grow a nice friendship with that person. Jesse learns that no matter where a person is from or to what they belong you can be able to grow a nice friendship and gain respect for them even if you will only see them for some days and never see the again, also that everyday of life is not always guaranteed like what happened to Hong Trac.

  12. Chapter is entitled "french lessons" because it what Hong and Jesse use to talk with one a other and this is the language they can use to talk as friends. The specific things that Jesse and Hong learn in this chapter is the thing they have in common as friends. The main "lesson" that Jesse ultimately learns is what look reality it don't look real.

  13. The reason the title of this chapter was entitled "French Lessons" was because french was the only language both Jesse and the enemy could communicate with. Jesse didn't know how to speak Vietnamese and the Vietnamese didn't know Spanish nor English very well. Therefore, french was there only option and the best way of communication for them. Jesse received the opportunity to talk to one of his enemies in good terms learning about each others heritage, personal life, and war. Jesse learns by Hong Trac that life is a valuable thing. Jesse had now made a "friend" and as a friend Hong told Jesse how to value life because it was something he had lost forever including his family, and wonderful places he loved to be surrounded by this was Hong's best motivation towards Jesse about life and the best about it not only regarding war.

  14. This chapter is given the title "french Lessons" because Jesse meets Hong Trac who speaks french just as he does. Jesse learns a little bit about Hong Trac and where he's from and Hong Trac learns about Jesse. Jesse learns that Hong Trac fears death just as he does, Jesse believes he is going to die and so does Hong Trac. They both share many of the same interests and views upon life and war.Jesse also learns that life is a state of mind and not a reality with his visoions of the past and present.

  15. This chapter was titled “French Lessons” because French is the language that both Jesse and Hong are good at. French is the language that they have in common. Something that Jesse learned is the way the north Vietnamese view the Americans. He also learned about different cultures; an example would be Hong’s culture. Something that I thought to be a main lesson that Jesse learned is that the truth will not always be told or expressed.

  16. This chapter is entitled french lessons because its the language they spoke in the chapter. Also at the end of the chapter Jesse learns the meaning of a particular word. Some specific things characters learn in this chapter are that the truth isnt told all the time.Hong Trac learns that what is taught about americans isnt always true like people of color living in seperate countries.Jesse learned that the Vietnamese do value life and that Hong Trac fears death. The main lesson learned is that Jesse realizes what the military does. They make it look like the people died in an accident when they were the ones that killed them.So he learns that the truth isnt always shown or told.

  17. Chapter 4 ,was entitled French Lessons because throughout the chapter the language that was spoken was French. Jesse and Hong both knew how to speak the language French and basically that was the only way they knew how to communicate with each other. Jesse and Hong learned that they both made each other understand what the real value of life was and will be. Another, is that Hong is afraid of death, so he tries living the best out of his own life. The real lesson that Jesse learns is that the truth has its own mysteries, because it can't be always shown or told, you have to see it yourself for you to understand the concepts.

  18. This chapter was entitled French Lessons because it was the language that both Jesse and the Vietnamese soldier, Hong used to communicate with eachother. And it was the only way they could talk to eachother because Jesse didn't know Vietnamese and Hong didn't know English.
A lesson that I believe they learned were that they can understand eachother or get to know what kind of person they are, even though they were completely different from eachother.
I think the main lesson that Jesse learned in this chapter was that the truth may have it's flaws or it isnt what it seems.

  19. The chapter was called "French Lessons" because French was the language that both characters used to be able to communicate with each other and be understood. These characters were Jesse and Hong. Jesse learns about the Vietnamese and how they portray the Americans. He learns this by talking with Hong. The real "lesson" that Jesse learns is that things aren't always how they appear to be.

  20. I believe this chapter is entitle"French Lessons" because French was the language that Jesse and Hong spoke to communicate with each other. Jesse learns about how the Vietnamese viewed the Americans and how to value life and not fear death. on the other hand Hong learns how the truth will not always be told.

  21. This chapter is titled "French Lessons" because French is the only language Jesse and Hong are able to communicate in. Jesse learns that the rumor of Vietnamese not valuing life is false. Hong replies by asking "If that is true, then why do I fear death so much?" (pg.83) And Hong learns that countries are seperated by color of skin. The main lesson that Jesse learns is life is very valuable and war has the ability to take life from anyone.

  22. The chapter is called "French Lessons" because French was the language both Jesse and Hong knew fluently, and the only language they could use to communicate. Throughout the chapter both Jesse and Hong learn various things about life. I believe both Jesse and Hong learned that even though they are enemies on the battlefield they have many things in common and can have a decent conversation between each other. Jesse also learns that in America they tell soldiers that the Vietnamese don't care about life, but this is in fact false because Hong says that he does cherish life and is afraid of dieing everyday. The main lesson Jesse ultimately learns is that life isn't what it seems. Before talking to Hong he thought that once North Vietnamese soldier was captured by American soldiers they wouldn't be killed and be kept as prisoners until the war was over. However, after talking to Hong he discovers that this is false and that high ranking officials like Hong are interrogated and killed using a screwdriver from one side of the head to the other. Jesse didn't believe this, but then when he sees Hong laying down in the ground with a hole in his head from one ear to another and bullet holes, that placed there after his death, he learns that Hong was right and life isn't what it seems to be.

  23. This chapter is titled "french lessons" becuase that was the language they were able to understand because they spoke it and understand it so it was their only option for communication. Jesse learned that if someone is racist it wouldnt make the world a better place. Also the truth about something won't always be shown my actions or feelings.

  24. I think that the chapter was titled "French Lessons" because some of the dialogue between the characters (specifically Jesse and Hong)used the French language for communication. Jesse learned that the vietnamese do value their lives because Hong tells him how much he fears death. Jesse thought that Hong would be safe where he was,but he learned that the military had very little concern for Hong's life and sure enough killed him after by tournevis Jesse's departure, then covered up the real cause of death with entry points and bullets to make it look like Hong died in a firefight.

  25. Week 3:
The chapter is named French less because throughout the chapter hong and jesse understood each other better when speaking french. The lessons come in when they learn about vietnamese and americans. Jesses mainly got a lesson from was like the truth isn't always let out. A lot of things are not always true. Also the characters learn the valuable things of life. " Children in school were told that all people of color live in separate countries.. (Pg81). There was another lesson when it showed how different people of different colors are treated differently. Jesse learned a new word that " tournevis" meant screwdriver pg. 86

  28. I personally think that the chapter is called french lessons because of what happened to the people. Many people didnt speak french.most of what they were told werent true. Some of the things that jesse was speaking didnt sound like french. I also think that it was called french lessons because the dialogue being spoke. Maybe where jesse was at, he had to speak french. Also jesse and hong spoke the language the way they could learn it and the way he would understand the meaning of the words.

  29. I'm guessing this chapter is called 'French Lessons' because only Jesse and Hong speak french in order to communicate with themselves. Hong learns that he will perish in prison because the sergeants will put "a screw driver through his left ear and drive it through the brain."(Vea84) Jesse also learns through Hong that in Vietnam thet teach the students that all people in the United States, people of different color live in a seperate country... I'm guessing the truth can be partially true depending on the situation and the facts that back it up.
Jesse learns the true meaning of 'tournevis' and what they really do with it

  30. The chapter is titled french lesson because it was the language that both Jesse and Hong used to communicate . The most important lesson that Jesse learns in this chapter is that the truth is not always going to be exposed. He was also shown that even the people that are meant to protect [military] lie .

  31. this chapter is entitled "french lessons" because it is the language that both Jesse and Hong have in common. Some things that they learn about are that people are treated differently depending on where they live. Jessse learned that in North Vietnam they had different views than americans and they treated their kind differently. Hong learned that life is not war and that there are other things to life.We also learned that Hong is traumatized by the war and is afraid when he hears things sound like an explosion. The main lesson is that the truth can sometimes be fabricated and that if you really want to figure it out you need to look for it yourself.

  32. This chapter in the book is entitled "French lesson" because Jesse meets a guy by the name of Hong and only them two speak French beside the other people Jesse met while waiting for his flight to Dong Ha. The lesson that Jesse learns from Hong is and everyone else is that the vietnamese look at Americans different and Americans look at Vietnamese people different. "in America they say that you vitenamese do not value life." (pg.83jesse) in vitenam their people don't fear death because they believe life is very value and when it's time to go and it's their time, they accept it nd so Jesse just thinks and accepts the life he live and what he's going through.

  33. This chapter is titled French lessons because in this chapter people spoke mostly French. Especially Jesse and Hong. Jesse learns from Hong that the truth is not always true and the life is not always what it seems. jesse also learns what tournevis means and what it is use for. he learns that they use it to torture prisoners.

  34. In chapter 4 " French Lesson " is titled this way because both Jesse and Hong speak French. Jesse learn in Vietnam about what they think of the Americans and how they taught colored people lived in different countries. I learn that the truth will always be told and there will always be someone with about the same abilities.

  35. I think chapter four was titled the "french Lesson"because the language that was spoken in this chapter was mostly french. Jesse used french to communicate with Hong Ha.A lesson learned in this chapter by hong ha was about like racism in the United States."In the north country, the children are told in school that the people of color in the united states live in a separate country.they are told that white Americans are rich.."(p81 vea).Hong found at that racism exist. I think the big lesson that Jesse learned in this chapter is death is nothing to be afraid of.

  36. The chapter is titled "french lessons" because it is the way Jesse and a Vietanam soldier, Hong, communicate through some french. That's how they learn about each other and the different worlds they come from, not the rumors that they hear about. Jesse learned about the differences and that the truth is usually twisted when passed down or tried to kept hidden. Hong knew the fate that waited for him, but Jesse knew nothing and seemed either naive or perhaps optimistic.
