(1) Jesse makes an analogy between war and working as a defense attorney. Based on the text, how appropriate is this analogy? Do you see yourself more as the kind of person who would be a prosecution attorney or a defense attorney? Explain.
OR
(2) How do Persephone's sisters deal with her death? Why is the ritual they perform interesting or significant? What rituals or activities does your family participate in when someone you love passes away?

Persephone's sisters deal with her death as if she didnt die, they dont cry they just spend some sister time for a whole day. The sisters dress her up, bathes her and gets her ready for her funeral. The ritual that they perform is interesting because they dont cry for her sister they just spend the last moments together. THe activities that my family partcipates when someone dies we pray for 9 days before the funeral.
ReplyDeletePersephone's sisters deal with her death as if she wasn't dead. Even though the sisters cry or laugh througout the time they clean and dress her up they seem to be enjoying the whole process with Persephone. The ritual that they perform on their sister is significant and special because they personally bathe, dress and put make up on their sister. They put a lot of things that only they would that Persephone for example her maternal dress that she bought to wear during her pregnancy. This moment reveals alot about Persephones character as a person and her relationship with her sisters. In Mexican culture when someone passes away we pray for 9 days for hours and have people over including reatives and friends and cook food for everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe analogy that Jesse makes of war and being a defense attorney is very appropriate. Jesse being a former veteran of the Vietnam War coincides with him now having a(n)occupation as a defense attorney. In a sense defending your country is relevant to defending those in society. One does not know why they are fighting exactly or why they are truly defending those in society, they just know that this is what they have to do and is what they have chose to do. I would be a defense attorney rather than a prosecution attorney because alot of innocent men and women go to jail because of crooked prosecutors who only care about winning and not displaying the truth.
ReplyDeletePersephone' s sisters seem to respond to her death very well. Which it not a typical thing many of us would do for our sisters. While Persephone was dead, the three sisters were still by her side treating her as if she was alive making sure they gave her full attention while getting her ready. This ritual was both interesting and significant because the three sisters showered her personally, put her favorite beauty soap, applied make up, and even included some of her favorite accessories on her. While making sure they got their sister beautiful for there good-bye much laughter occured among them making the best time out of it. They made sure they spend a full night from sunset to sunrise all together as there tradition. My family and I tend to do a rosary for our loved one and make sure we gather all our family and freinds to show love and respect.
ReplyDeletePersephone sisters deal with her death in a calm but unusual way. They received her death as if its not real. Meaning they didn't see her as being dead because they bathed her and lotioned/moistered her body as if she was alive; staying by her side and treating her the way they normally would. This ritual was interesting and significant to them. Often times when someone dies people are scared to even go near or touch a dead body. However, they knew she was dead but wanted to do some things that was important to their sister and what she would have done if she was living. This is their way of excepting her death and remembering her life. The bathing of their sister and getting her ready for her funeral is their way of showing the love they had for their sister and the things they often shared together such as(spending time with one another).
ReplyDeleteWhen someone passes away my family gathers together and prepare a memorial service or we call it a "Homegoing Celebration" for the person. We call it this because its a celebration of the life they live, especially if its an older(elderly) person. Clothing is also provided for them to be buried in, just like Persephone sisters provided for her. Following the service the family and friends gather together and eat and talk about the good times we all shared with this person.
WEEK ONE: Jesse was a veteran of the Vietnam War and became an attorney he was defending and those around him. Not really knowing why to fight soldiers just fights anyway because they are told. I personally would not want to be neither a prosecutor nor a defense attorney because either way you can have mixed evidence and put the wrong person in jail for the wrong crime and I am not for locking people up without a confession because you never know who did what and how they did it. It possible to have the wrong DNA and evidence for a crime so I rather not get involved in the law.
ReplyDeletePersephone' s sisters delt with Persephone's death as if she didn't pass away. They didn't cry, they reminisced on what their sister did and had a few laughs about it. The ritual is significant because the sisters individually bathed, dressed, apply make-up on her, and added little accessories which were very special to her.
ReplyDeleteWhen a loved one passes away, we have a rosary and gather all our friends and family together to show love and respect toward them.

ReplyDeleteBecause Jesse was present during the Vietnam war and knows the trauma and the horrible memories that soldiers get when they come back he can relate the war and be a defense attorney. These soldiers can be guilty or not. Maybe because they are living in a trauma they are the ones causing a lot of trouble. Should we persecute them for these reasons.Or can Jesse figure out who is guilty? Here both the persecutor and the defense attorney can't determine whether they do wrong or right. If they take a position both can be wrong. However, I am a defender and a persecutor at the same time because I want justice not the opposite of it. If these are guilty they will be persecuted. Is always like this no matter what position we take.
ReplyDeleteBased on the text, Jesse's comparison between war and being a defense attorney is appropriate. It is appropriate because Jesse has been to war so he knows what happens during a war and can compare it to his job as a defense attorney. What makes this analogy even more appropriate is that Jesse is remembering his experience in the Vietnam war and not just making assumptions about the war or basing his comparison on other people's stories.
ReplyDeleteI would personally rather be a defense attorney then a prosecution attorney because a defense attorney helps a defendant. A prosecutor just sends people to prison and doesn't really defend anybody. Plus a prosecutor is usually manipulative towards the jury, doesn't really care about the person he is sending to jail, and usually just cares about winning even if it means sending an innocent man/woman to jail. However, a defense attorney helps either keep an innocent man out of jail or reduce the sentence of a guilty person to something reasonable and not outrages.
This analogy is appropriate based on the text because there are a lot of similarities between war and defense attorneys.Based on the text they both have to work hard and they break a sweat. Also both of them get wounded, every lawyer suffers for their clients. There are also different types of people in the court as there is in war, those people are against each other. They both have to fight for something.Fighting is also their only way to accomplish what they want, or their only way to win.I see myself as more of a defense attorney because I would try to defend them and at least give them a chance instead of directly sending them to jail and not caring about the person.
ReplyDeleteWhen Persephone dies, her sisters perform a ritual tradition used when someone dies. They spend one full night from sunset to sunrise with her Persephone and chose the clothes which she would be buried with. They did not only choose her cloth but also bathed, dressed, put make-up on her. They used her on her stuff that were her favorite and stuff that were significant to her as well. For example, Persephone’s sisters put a dress on her that she bought when she found out she was pregnant.
ReplyDeleteWhen a family member passes away in Guatemala, the family member’s change them and put make-up on them before they get harden then, they put them in their box. The family and friends pray for a whole day before burying them. After they are buried they pray for nine day. One the tenth day flowers are taken to the cemetery and the people pray again and hand bread, coffee, and tamales to the family and friends. After 40 days of the person being dead, the family and friend gather up again, pray and hand food again, same after one year and seven years.
Persephone's sisters deal with her death in a calml madder .wince they cried much but they also laughed as well. They treated persphone as if she were still alive while bathing and dressing her up. The ritual that was performed on Persephone was wierd in a intresting way as they personally dressed and bathed Persephone with her maternal dress and they also did her make up .in my family when a loved one passes away We gather as a family and do a 9 day rosary for the loved one
ReplyDeletePersephone sees her sisters death, yes as a tragedy, but they dont grieve about it. Instead they reminisce on the moments they had with her. Though the ritual they do for her is unknown from where it was developed they insist on still doing so. They have her sent home and from there they bathe here with the products she enjoy and then dress her with clothes they enjoy seeing them and then place make up on her acedo their hair and pour perfume that decise enjoyed as well acessories on them. A ritual in my family i can recall for one that has passed is basically the same thing they do.
ReplyDeletePersephone’s sisters dealt with her death pretty well. They spent a whole day together remembering without all the crying that usually happens when a loved one has past away; the sisters are acting as if Persephone never died. They bathe her, dress her up very nice, do her make up; all to get her ready for her funeral. The ritual was special and significant because the sisters personally fixed up Persephone; they knew exactly what would make her happy. This demonstrates how close they were as sisters.
ReplyDeleteWhen someone we know has past away we tend to pray what is called a “novena”; nine days of praying to try to help our loved ones make to heaven sooner. This includes everyone who knew the person. After all the praying on the ninth day, we cook up a dinner enough for everybody who participated.
According to the text, Jesse compares the vietnam war and his defense attorney. This analogy is quite appropriate because not only has Jesse been to the vietnam war but also he is what he is now as a defense attorney. At this point it gives Jesse a good advantage to see what is going on with the soldiers when they come back from the war. Not only does Jesse have an advantage but he could also help the soldiers fight their problem and maybe change the way they are into someone much better.
ReplyDeleteI see myself as a prosecution and a defense attorney, as a prosecution i wouldn't like to have someone in the streets that has some kind of tragic problem and have no help. This is where my Defense attorney comes in, instead of putting someone in jail and living my life knowing I ended someone life by putting them behind bars, i would like to help him/her with their issues to make them a better person and get ride of their issues.
The death of Persephone was of course a tragedy to her family, like any death would be. But the maturity that the sisters showed such as fixing their sister for her funeral, reminiscing on her life, etc. The death of Persephone brought her family, in a bittersweet way. The reminiscing of the sisters memories with Persephone were something that awakened Persephone in the book, as if she was never gone. The way the sisters got together and fixed their sister up as well, was beautiful and showed that they were united as a family, which allowed me to relate a lot too, since I'm not the kind of person to get really emotional, but i love to talk and gather around with the memories someone has left me with.
ReplyDeletePersephones don't really deal with her death as is she really didn't die. They didnt reaaly think she was dead. her sister's didnt mourn like people usually do. They actually personally bathed her, dressed her up and reminised on what persephone died. Instead of them crying about her death they remided themselves of all the good memories they had and laughed about it.The sisters could't believe that she was dead so they treated her as if she was still alive. This showed that they really cared about her sister.
ReplyDeleteWhen someone dies in our family, we don't just sit and cry and ask for them back, we do this ceremony for about 9 or less days. Every other day, we go to that person's house and pray differently for a differet amount of time and yes, people would cry, but they would also have this little food get together and remind others that the perso isn't gone. They will forever be with us and think good of them.
Even though, Persephone died, her family becomes, lets say closer. A death of a family member will always be something that is not pleasant and of course will bring a lot of sadness. Persephone's sisters don't act as if she is dead or even act sad. When someone dies in my family we wait eight days from their death, eat bread, and drink coffee. We say our blessings, sing, and light the candles.
ReplyDelete"Question 2"
ReplyDeletePersephone's sisters prepared her body as if she were still alive, the also conversed as if she were listening and following the conversation. The rituals that were performed seemed strange because usually there is a more dark or depressing mood that occurs at deadly events. Personally, I'm not sure what my family does because thankfully we only lost one family member, but when we did loose that person, it was requested that bright colors be worn and the funeral to be like a party. That was how we coped with the death of my baby cousin .
Although Persephone's sisters were sad that she was dead they preferred to reminiscent about the good times they all had with Persephone. That is shown when one of the sisters starts to cry and she is told not too.
ReplyDeleteTheir ritual is quite interesting because usually when someone dies there is a lot of mourning and grieving. However Persephone's sisters dress her and make her look beautiful and joyful. They do that as well to Mai, since there were no claimants of her body.
Usually in my family when a loved one passes away family and friends spend 9 days saying prayers because it is believed that it would make the spirit be in peace.
Persephone's sister deal with her deathas if she don't die, they just had some sister time for the whole day like dress her up and making her clean for her funeral. But the ritual they perform was interesting why because they didn't even cry a bit they just had some sister time as if it was never over for them. When someone die for my family we get all together with people who now that person we love and start pray for nine days ,so that person can go to the light of heaven.
ReplyDeletePersephone's sisters did a ritual for her as part of their tradition. During the ritual the sisters weren't crying, it seemed as if they were enjoying it. It is significant because the sisters were bathing Persephone and applied make up on her and did most of the stuff Persephone would do to herself. Maybe the sisters were doing all of that to try to spend their last moments with her before saying goodbye and they were trying to make it the best! In my family when a loved one Passes away we go to church and pray a whole rosery at church with the people who also knew the person. Also a few days before the funeral we all gather for a last time and bring some food ready for everyone because that miht would be our last, and we send our condolices and do our last prayers.

ReplyDelete-Jesse making the analogy between war and working as a defense attorney comes to an appropriate connection between the two different positions. Jesse being a defendant comes in place to both situations, such as defending his client Antonio Ruiz in the case of Antonio being attacked by a tiger while he was caught burglarizing, because he is taking part in defending someone. And for his past where he was at war it relates to the analogy he made because while he took place of fighting in war he was defending his country. It seemed to me as if the message he was trying to give out by his analogy was that he tried to defend what ever he thought was right for him or who ever needed his help on proving a point of justice. In my position I wouldn't want to be much of either one, but if I had to i would be a prosecution attorney because I wouldn't want to defend someone that I know did something wrong. The person who I am defending would need to clarify to me why the committed their action and why they believe it was right what they did, it would also depend if I would agree with the persons belief.
1)Based on the text, Jesse's comparison is fairly appropriate because Jesse was given an opportunity to defend his country, and this can benefit him being a Defense Attorney by defending people. Jesse also has experience of being a soldier, he knows what trials and tribulations the soldiers have to go through. This gives him an opportunity to relate to ones situation , and can benefit him greatly as a defense attorney.
ReplyDeleteI would rather be a defense attorney instead of a prosecutor. There are so many individuals that get prosecuted for a crime that they aren't even responsible. Which is unfair. In order for me to be a defense attorney, there would have to be a mass amount of evidence that shows that my client is innocent. Prosecuting someone can be good and bad, without evidence even worse. I wouldn't want to prosecute someone that's completely innocent.
Persephone's sisters deals with her death as if she never died. The sisters laugh or cry while they dress and clean her up, they seem to be enjoying themselves and everything they are doing. The ritual is interesting because they all help dress, bathe, and put make up on their sister. They don't cry or anything they enjoy the last moments of spending time with eachother. What me and my family does when someone dies is we all come together as a family and pray, we have a viewing of the body the day before the funeral, the day of the funeral we come together and say what we liked about them and how much they will be remembered, after the funeral we go to someone's house and eat and have fun.
ReplyDeleteJesse was once apart of the Vietnam War and after he finished up with the War he realized that he was there to protect and defend his country. So the analogy that Jesse made was very appropriate because he connected a denfense anttonery and working in the war.
ReplyDeleteIf i had to chose, I would be a defense attorney because no matter what, Im going to try my hardest to defend anything or anyone. Thats kind of the reason why Jesses became a defense attorney, he felt that if he could help defend his country and win then why couldnt he help defend this person and get thm off trial.
Persephone's sisters deal with her death as if she did not die, as if they were trying to remember the last moments. The sisters bathed her carefully with her favorite beauty soap, put makeup, and put her maternity dress. In other words the sisters made her look pretty by putting Persephone her favorite things and showing her beauty. This was interesting because this shows their kindness all the sisters and including Persephone had with each other. When someone dies, what my family does is that we pray for nine days so they can find the light and so they can rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteWhen Persephone died, her sisters acted like most people would do to cope with a loved one death, they acted as if she was still there. They spent the day with her, putting her make up on, doing her hair, and putting on her favorite perfume and accesories. What makes this significant is that they wanted to do all those things to sort of say goodbye and spend their last moments happy remembering the good times instead of thinking that she wont be there anymore. they would rather dress her and bathe her as they knew she would do if she were still alive. If someone dies in my family, i wouldnt really know what we would do because ive never had a family member that has died but if someone did i think i would pray for them and remember them just like Persephones sisters did for her.
ReplyDeleteQUESTION 1: THE analogy Jesse made between working as a defense lawyer and war was very appropriate. With him being a veteran from the Vietnam war it was typical for him to compare his job a defense attorney to war. the comparison was very appropriate because as describe in the text the work of a defense attorney is grimy like war.
ReplyDeleteI would be a defense attorney because i want to keep people out of jail and that is what they do. i would also like to be a defense attorney because they make more money then a prosecution attorney

I feel that the analogy of of war and an defense attorney is a good analogy to use beause with war, one country is defending itself and with a defense attorney, the attorney is defending the client to try and prove they are innocent of any crime commited. If i had to choose i would be a prosecution attorney but i would actually look for the truth in my cases and not try to twist things just to win a case. My job as a prosecutor attorney would be to only convict those guilty of there crimes and not the innocent.
ReplyDeletePersephone's sisters dealt with her death in an interesting way, they didn't break down completely or anything instead they mourned her by remembering her and her life. They told stories about Persephone, her life, and her dreams. Also the sisters dressed persephone in clothes that were special to her and made her look like herself and not someone else or some image they might hve had of her. They even took Mai and did the same for her even if they didn't know her. When someone passes way in ou family we just pray for them, we don't have any special rituals or anything, we just pray and remeber them.
ReplyDeletePersephone's sister's dealt with her death in a different way then usual. It was interesting the ritual they participated in because they didn't out expressed their feelings for the sister they were with her at all times and they took in charge of her as towards doing her makeup. The rituals that my family participates is when a love on pasts away is that they do a "Rosario" which is when we pray for nine days and remember the loved one that pasted away.
